How the after-tax figure works. On IRA or 401(k) money, every payment is ordinary income. On non-qualified money, the exclusion ratio treats part of each payment as return of your own cost, so only the rest is taxed until your cost is recovered. Federal tax uses the 2026 brackets and standard deduction, California uses the CA 2025 schedule (latest published), and the figure is the extra tax from this annuity on top of the other income you enter.
