An agent sat across from you, walked you through an annuity, and now you're holding a proposal and quietly wondering: "Is this actually good for me — or good for the person selling it?"

That instinct is worth listening to. An annuity is often a 6-to-15-year commitment with surrender charges — one of the biggest, least-reversible financial decisions people make in retirement. Getting a second set of eyes before you sign costs you nothing and can save you from a contract that quietly underperforms for a decade.

This page explains how a free, independent second opinion works — written by a licensed producer who didn't sell you the policy and has no reason to defend it.

Why a second opinion matters (the honest version)

The agent who quoted you may be excellent. But they may also be captive to one carrier, paid a bigger commission on the exact product they showed you, or simply may not have compared it against what else is on the market this month. You have no way to know from inside the sales conversation.

A second opinion answers the questions the pitch usually skips:

What to bring / what I look at

If you want a real review, have these handy (a photo of the proposal is fine):

  1. The product name and carrier
  2. The premium/quote amount
  3. The surrender period and any bonus
  4. The income rider details, if one was included
  5. What the agent told you it would do for you

I'll compare it against current products across multiple A-rated carriers, tell you plainly where it's strong, where it's weak, and whether I'd sign it if I were you. If it's a good deal, I'll tell you to keep it — a second opinion isn't a switch pitch.

Send me what you were quoted. I'll give you an honest read — strengths, weaknesses, and whether it fits you — with no obligation and no pressure. If it's a good deal, I'll say so.

Frequently asked

Does a second opinion cost anything? No. It's free and there's no obligation.

Will you just try to sell me something else? No. If the annuity you were quoted is a good fit, I'll tell you to keep it. My job here is an honest read, not a switch.

Can you review an annuity I already bought? Yes — if you're inside the free-look period (typically 10–30 days) you may still have options, and even after, it's worth knowing where you stand.

What if I was quoted by a captive agent? That's exactly when a second opinion helps most — a captive agent can only show you their own company's products.

Hans Goldstein is an independent licensed insurance producer (NPN 20602398) appointed with multiple A-rated carriers across the annuity and long-term care insurance market. Annuities are long-term contracts with surrender charges; they are not suitable for funds you may need before the end of the surrender period. Rates, caps, participation rates, and payout factors change frequently — always confirm current values against the most recent carrier disclosure document and the actual contract before purchasing. Past index performance does not predict future credited interest. Always read the actual contract and consult a licensed advisor before purchasing any annuity.
