Barclays Online Savings pays 3.20% APY and Barclays Tiered Savings pays 3.50% on balances under $250,000 and 3.65% from $250,000 to $1 million (APYs Barclays lists as accurate as of September 11, 2026). Savings account vs MYGA, after tax
Rates used: Savings account 4.00%, the top online savings rate we tracked (bank sites, September 24, 2026); savings rates can change any day; change it to the rate you are offered. MYGA 5.95%, the best A-rated rate we track as of October 13, 2026: Delaware Life Pinnacle Plus 5-year (AM Best A-, negative outlook, 7/31/2026), $100,000 and up, effective October 6, 2026 (Delaware Life rate sheet).
| Savings account, interest taxed every year | $116,604 |
|---|---|
| MYGA, tax-deferred, before tax | $133,507 |
| MYGA after paying tax on all the interest at withdrawal | $126,136 |
| Tax deferral alone adds about | $674 |
| MYGA ahead of the savings account, after tax | $9,531 |
Assumes 22% federal and 0% state income tax, no withdrawals, rates held for the whole term. MYGA interest is taxed as ordinary income when you withdraw it, not as capital gains. Gains taken before age 59 1/2 can owe a 10% IRS penalty, and cashing out early can cost a surrender charge. In an IRA both grow tax-deferred, so the edge there is the rate alone. Bank and credit union deposits are FDIC or NCUA insured up to the limits; a MYGA is backed by the issuing insurer's claims-paying ability and your state's guaranty association up to its limits, not the FDIC. | Item | Barclays rule |
|---|---|
| Ways to deposit | ACH from a linked external account, mobile check deposit, or checks mailed to Barclays, P.O. Box 4538, Carol Stream, IL 60197. No cash, no third-party checks. |
| Incoming wires | Not accepted. Barclays does not accept wire transfers. |
| Linking an outside account | Two test deposits under $1.00 arrive within 2-3 business days; you confirm the amounts before transfers start. |
| Hold on deposits | Check and electronic deposits are held 5 business days from the day credited. ACH credits and transfers from another Barclays account are available immediately. Interest starts when the deposit posts, even while held. |
| Withdrawals | ACH to your linked external account only, typically posting 2-3 business days after processing. |
| Number of transfers | No limit on transfers out of Online Savings. |
| Mobile check deposit | $5,000 per check, $10,000 per day, 10 checks per day, $50,000 or 20 checks per 10 business days. |
| Account caps | Up to 25 Barclays accounts in total; no more than 3 Tiered Savings accounts, each capped at $1 million in deposits. A Tiered Savings account at a zero balance for 6 months closes automatically. |
What this means: push money in from your other bank rather than pulling it from Barclays, so it lands as an ACH credit and skips the 5-day hold. Plan for 2-3 business days on the way out, and never plan on a same-day wire.
The APY comparison is above. This table compares the parts that matter once the money is in: getting it out, wire options and the insured bank behind the brand.
| Bank / account | Insured bank (FDIC cert) | Minimum / monthly fee | Incoming wires | Outgoing wires | Withdrawal limits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Barclays Online / Tiered Savings | Barclays Bank Delaware, Wilmington, DE (57203) | $0 / none | Not accepted | Not offered; ACH only | No limit on number of transfers |
| Ally Bank Savings | Ally Bank, Sandy, UT (57803) | $0 / $0 | Accepted, $0 | $20 domestic | 10 withdrawals per statement cycle, no fee for going over |
| Synchrony High Yield Savings | Synchrony Bank, Draper, UT (27314) | No minimum deposit / no monthly fee | Accepted (sending bank starts it) | $25, requested by phone | Not stated on the product page |
| Capital One 360 Performance Savings | Capital One, N.A., McLean, VA (4297) | No minimum / no fees | Accepted (domestic); available same business day | $30 per domestic wire, if the bank agrees to send it | 6 transfers per cycle to third parties or other Capital One accounts, currently not enforced |
| American Express High Yield Savings | American Express National Bank, Sandy, UT (27471) | No minimum / no monthly fee | Accepted, $500 minimum; not directly from a non-U.S. bank | $500 minimum; $500,000 per rolling 30 days online, $2 million by phone | No current limit on number of ACH transfers; $5 million maximum balance |
The read: Barclays is the only bank in this group with no wire option in either direction. That is fine for a rainy-day account. If you might need to move a large sum on a closing date, open the account where wires work, or keep a buffer at a bank that offers them.
A savings account is the right home for emergency money. For money you will not need for three to five years, a multi-year guaranteed annuity fixes the rate for the term and defers the tax.
| $250,000 for 5 years | Barclays Online Savings | 5-yr MYGA at 5.80% |
|---|---|---|
| Rate | 3.20% APY, variable (assumed to hold all 5 years) | 5.80% fixed for the term |
| Tax on interest | Every year (1099-INT) | Deferred until withdrawn |
| Value after 5 years, after 24% federal tax | ~$281,900 | ~$311,900 (tax paid at the end) |
| Protection | FDIC, $250K per ownership category | Insurer claims-paying ability + state guaranty association (limits vary by state) |
| Getting money out | No penalty; the rate can change any day | Surrender charge above the free-withdrawal amount; IRS 10% penalty before 59½ |
About $30,000 more after tax on the MYGA if the savings rate never moved (24% federal bracket, state tax ignored). Savings rates are variable, so the real gap depends on where the rate goes. Emergency money belongs in savings; a MYGA is for money you will not need for the full term. Fixed annuity benchmark: carriers rated A or better topped out around 5.80% to 6.00% on 5-year compound-interest MYGAs, per AnnuityRateWatch data, September 24, 2026. Rates vary by state, premium and carrier.

Barclays Online Savings pays 3.20% APY and Barclays Tiered Savings pays 3.50% under $250,000 and 3.65% from $250,000 to $1 million, per Barclays (APYs accurate as of September 11, 2026).
Yes. Deposits are held at Barclays Bank Delaware (FDIC cert 57203), FDIC-insured up to $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category.
Both have no minimum and no monthly fees. Tiered Savings pays more (3.50%-3.65% vs 3.20%) and carries a $200 new-customer bonus for $25,000 held 120 days, through October 31, 2026.
Yes. As of September 11, 2026: 6 months 4.00% APY, 9 months 4.15%, 12 months 4.25%, 18 months 3.00%, 24 months 4.35%, 36 and 48 months 2.50%, 60 months 4.25%. No minimum.
Marcus Online Savings paid 3.50% APY as of September 24, 2026, the same as Barclays Tiered Savings on balances under $250,000 and more than Barclays Online Savings (3.20%).
For 3-to-5-year money a MYGA fixes the rate and defers tax: A-rated-or-better insurers paid about 5.80%-6.00% on 5-year MYGAs on September 24, 2026.
Barclays does not list a buckets or sub-savings feature on its savings pages or FAQ (checked October 7, 2026). The workaround is separate accounts: Barclays allows up to 25 accounts in total, including up to 3 Tiered Savings accounts, with no minimum and no monthly fee. Ally Bank Savings, by contrast, has built-in buckets.
No. Barclays says it does not accept wire transfers. Fund the account by ACH from a linked external account, mobile check deposit, or a mailed check. Pushing an ACH from your other bank avoids the 5-business-day hold Barclays applies to electronic deposits it pulls in.
Linking an outside account takes 2-3 business days for the test deposits. After that, ACH transfers out typically post 2-3 business days after processing. Deposits Barclays pulls in are held 5 business days; ACH credits pushed from another bank and transfers between Barclays accounts are available immediately (Barclays FAQ, checked October 7, 2026).
If you bank with Barclays, use Tiered Savings (3.50%-3.65%), not Online Savings (3.20%). Its 24- and 60-month CDs are competitive; skip the 18-, 36- and 48-month terms. For three-to-five-year money, compare a MYGA.
