ACH (Automated Clearing House) is the rails for nearly all bank-to-bank transfers in the US. ACH is batch-processed, not real-time. Timing:
| Direction | Standard ACH Timing |
|---|---|
| Push (external bank → HYSA) | 1-2 business days |
| Pull (HYSA → external bank) | 1-3 business days |
| Same-bank internal | Instant (or within minutes) |
| Same-day ACH (newer rail) | Same business day, if initiated before bank's cutoff |
When you push (initiate at the external bank), funds leave the sending bank immediately and arrive next day. When you pull (initiate at the HYSA), the HYSA's ACH system has to verify funds, request the debit from the external bank, then settle. This adds a day on average. Some HYSAs (Discover, Ally) show the funds as "pending" in your HYSA immediately on a pull, but you can't withdraw them until they fully settle.
| Bank | Push (in) Speed | Pull (out) Speed |
|---|---|---|
| Marcus | 1-2 days | 1-3 days (often next day for repeat transfers) |
| Ally | 1-3 days | 1-3 days |
| SoFi | 1-3 days (instant within SoFi accounts) | 1-3 days |
| Discover | 1-3 days (3 days for new external accounts) | 1-3 days |
| American Express | 1-3 days | 1-3 days |
| Synchrony | 1-3 days | 1-3 days |
| Capital One 360 | 1-3 days (instant to other Cap One accounts) | 1-3 days |
| CIT Bank | 1-3 days | 1-3 days |
| Barclays | 2-3 days (slowest of top tier) | 2-3 days |
Wires are real-time settlement via Fedwire. If you initiate before the bank's cutoff (typically 3-4pm ET), the funds arrive at the destination bank same-day, usually within hours. Caveat: wires are one-way (no easy reversal) and require careful entry of the recipient routing + account numbers. A typo can send the money to the wrong account permanently.

Same-day ACH is a newer rail (launched 2016, expanded in 2021 and 2024). It allows ACH transfers to settle the same business day if initiated before the bank's cutoff (typically 1-2pm ET). Not every bank offers it to consumers as "same-day" — many keep the standard 1-3 day timing even when they technically use the same-day rail underneath. Worth a check with your specific bank.
A few banks support instant push to debit cards via Visa Direct or Mastercard Send. SoFi and Ally support some of these for limited transfer types. Instant transfers usually have a 1-1.5% fee.
Zelle is instant for person-to-person transfers between most major banks. Limit usually $500-$5,000/day depending on the sending bank. You can't Zelle from your HYSA to yourself if both ends are at the same bank, but if your HYSA bank supports Zelle, you can use it to instantly move money to another person who can then push it where needed.
Deposit a paper check via the HYSA's mobile app. Timing:
Holds are at the bank's discretion within the Regulation CC framework. New customers or first deposits from a new source often see longer holds. Established customers with deposit history usually get faster availability.
ACH doesn't process on weekends or federal holidays. A transfer initiated Friday afternoon settles Monday or Tuesday (skipping the weekend). Initiated Wednesday before a Thursday holiday, it may settle Friday or following Monday. Always count business days, not calendar days.
Federal banking holidays (2026): New Year's Day, MLK Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, July 4, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas.
Most ACH transfers complete in 1-3 days. If yours is delayed past 5 business days, contact both banks. Common causes: external bank rejected the debit (insufficient funds), routing number error, fraud review on a large amount, name mismatch on linked accounts. Banks can trace ACH transfers — provide them the trace number from your confirmation.
Most ACH transfers settle in 1-3 business days. 5+ days usually means: (1) the transfer initiated after the bank's cutoff (pushed to next day), (2) a weekend or federal holiday fell in between, (3) the bank placed a hold for fraud review on a large amount, or (4) the external bank rejected the transfer and the failure notification is in transit. Contact both banks with the trace number from your confirmation.
Yes, via outbound wire ($15-30 fee) initiated before the bank's cutoff (typically 3-4pm ET). Marcus, SoFi, and Amex offer $0 outbound wires. Wires settle same-day. Standard ACH cannot settle same-day at most consumer HYSAs.
Instant or near-instant. If you have an HYSA and a checking account at the same bank (e.g., Ally HYSA + Ally Interest Checking), transfers between them are immediate — funds appear in the destination account within seconds to minutes.
When you pull funds into the HYSA from an external bank, most banks show the deposit as 'pending' immediately — the funds are visible but not yet withdrawable. They settle in 1-3 business days. Some banks impose holds (especially on new external accounts) where the funds aren't even visible until settlement.
Yes — once the bank has accepted the deposit (usually within minutes of submission), the funds are insured as part of your account balance under FDIC. Holds on availability for withdrawal don't change the FDIC status. The funds are insured even if you can't access them yet.
Initiate transfers near the start of the month. Many HYSAs calculate daily interest based on the closing balance — funds in transit may not earn interest at either bank for 1-3 days. If you have a large balance moving (e.g., $200K), the lost interest is real ($30-60 over 3 days). Push transfers (faster) minimize this gap.
Sometimes. ACH transfers can usually be canceled within a few hours of initiation if they haven't entered the next batch. After they enter the ACH network, cancellation requires a reversal request from the originating bank, which has limited success. Wires cannot be canceled once sent — that's why typos on wires are catastrophic. Always double-check routing/account numbers before confirming a wire.
