Short answer: IUL cash value is flat for the first years, then bends upward like a hockey stick once early charges are absorbed and compounding takes over. How fast depends on your age, your health class and, most of all, how hard the policy is funded. Enter a monthly premium to see a ballpark in three columns, guaranteed, midpoint and illustrated, plus your break-even year and whether the guaranteed column lapses.
The funding tier. Think of the policy as a vehicle and your premium as cargo. A car (minimum funding) carries protection, not much cash. An SUV (target funding) carries both. A semi-truck (max funding) is built to haul cash, loaded up to a legal weight limit, the MEC line in IRC 7702A. Load a car with semi-truck cargo and the policy becomes a modified endowment contract, which changes how loans and withdrawals are taxed.
The three columns. California illustration rules ask for guaranteed values first, with non-guaranteed values clearly labeled. The guaranteed column assumes 0% credits and maximum charges. The illustrated column uses a flat rate near the AG 49-A maximum. The midpoint sits halfway. Real years bounce between them, and carriers can change caps, participation rates and the cost of insurance.
Break-even year. The first year the surrender value is at least the premiums you have paid. In a well-funded design that is often around years 6 to 13 on the illustrated column. Thinly funded designs can take much longer or never get there, and the guaranteed column usually never does.
Option B to A. An increasing death benefit (Option B, face plus cash value) while you fund the policy keeps more premium inside the tax limits. Switching to a level death benefit (Option A) once premiums stop lets the cash value shrink the amount at risk, which cuts the cost of insurance at older ages. Get an in-force illustration before switching, especially inside the first 7 years.
Hans’s order for most people: take the 401(k) match, then Roth contributions and Roth conversions in the right years, then consider a max-funded IUL if you also want permanent death benefit, no age-59½ rule on policy access and no dollar contribution cap. Policy loan rates run about 5 to 6.5% or more (as of September 2026), so this is not a borrowing arbitrage story.
We rarely recommend an IUL to someone 65 or older for cash value. At that age it is a death benefit tool. If an agent pitches a 65-year-old an IUL as a savings plan, they either have not run the cost of insurance or are not putting you first.
Health class matters more than most people expect. Many applicants do not qualify for the best class, and anything unusual in the records (build, blood pressure, labs, medications, history) can drop you a class, which flows straight into the cost of insurance.
Q: Is this an insurance illustration or a quote?
A: No. It is a hypothetical ballpark for education, built on public 2017 CSO mortality tables and typical IUL charges. It is not tied to any carrier or product. Actual results depend on underwriting, carrier charges and crediting, which can change. Only a carrier-issued illustration shows actual values.
Q: What do car, SUV and semi-truck mean?
A: They describe how much of your premium the policy is built to carry as cash. A car is minimum funding: protection first, thin cash value. An SUV is target funding: protection plus some cash. A semi-truck is max funding: the smallest death benefit that legally holds your premium, loaded up to the MEC line set by tax law.
Q: Why is the guaranteed column so much lower?
A: The guaranteed column assumes 0% index credits every year and the maximum cost of insurance the contract allows. Real policies rarely get both, but it is the only column the carrier promises, so this calculator always shows it. Midpoint and illustrated columns are not guaranteed.
Q: Why does the calculator warn people 65 and older?
A: Cash value takes 10 to 15 years or more to bend upward, and the cost of insurance is about 3 times the age-65 rate by 75 and about 10 times by 85 on the 2017 CSO table. At 65 an IUL is a death benefit or estate tool. For safe growth at that age, a fixed annuity is the usual fit.
Q: What is the MEC line?
A: Tax law (IRC 7702A) limits how much premium a policy can take in its first 7 years for a given death benefit. Go over it and the policy becomes a modified endowment contract: loans and withdrawals are taxed gain-first, with a 10% penalty before 59 1/2. The death benefit stays generally income-tax-free.
Q: Why does a small premium get pushed up to $100,000 of coverage?
A: Fully underwritten IULs, the paramed exam path, usually start around $100,000 of face. A larger face than your premium needs means more cost of insurance eating the cash value. No-exam or express IULs allow a smaller face but usually come with lower caps. That is the trade-off for small premiums.
Q: Is IUL cash value tax-free?
A: Only with conditions. Policy loans and withdrawals up to your basis are generally not taxed if the policy is not a modified endowment contract and stays in force. A lapse or surrender with a loan outstanding can create taxable income. The death benefit is generally income-tax-free under IRC 101(a). Talk to your CPA.

Actual results depend on underwriting, carrier charges and crediting, which can change. Only a carrier-issued illustration shows actual values. An IUL is life insurance, not an investment. Guarantees are backed by the financial strength and claims-paying ability of the issuing insurer and apply only to the contract’s terms.
