Facts verified against Athene's Ascent Pro 10 Bonus product guide (rates effective 08/28/2026), brochure and current rates page on October 4, 2026 · Updated

Athene Ascent Pro 10 Bonus is a 10-year fixed indexed annuity from Athene Annuity and Life Company with a 10% premium bonus on the cash value and a built-in income rider. Per Athene's product guide (rates effective August 28, 2026, still shown on Athene's rates page October 4, 2026), the rider adds a 25% Income Base bonus and 10% simple interest growth for up to 20 years for a 1.00% annual charge.

The premium bonus vests over time; in most states nothing vests before year 7.

Rates on this page were verified October 4, 2026 against Athene's current rates page and the Ascent Pro 10 Bonus product guide (form 65220, rates effective August 28, 2026). Athene says rates are subject to change at any time. For reference: A-rated 5-year MYGAs topped out around 5.50% to 6.05% (public carrier rate sheets, October 14, 2026), and the best nationally available 5-year CDs paid 4.70% to 5.00% APY (Bankrate and Popular Direct, October 18, 2026).

Correction (October 4, 2026): earlier versions of this page listed Athene at AM Best "A" and Moody's "A2", and showed the bonus vesting 10%, 20%, 30% a year to 100%.

Athene's own brochure shows AM Best A+ and Moody's A1 (ratings as of August and July 2025), and its product guide shows that 10% a year vesting schedule applies only in California. In most states the bonus is 0% vested through year 6. Older cap figures and unverified ratings and scores have been removed.

CD vs MYGA, after tax

What $100,000 earns in 5 years: CD vs MYGA, after tax

Rates used: CD 5.00%, the top nationally available 5-year CD (Bankrate, October 14, 2026); change it to the rate you are offered. MYGA 5.95%, the best A-rated rate we track as of October 13, 2026: Delaware Life Pinnacle Plus 5-year (AM Best A-, negative outlook, 7/31/2026), $100,000 and up, effective October 6, 2026 (Delaware Life rate sheet).

CD, interest taxed every year$121,081
MYGA, tax-deferred, before tax$133,507
MYGA after paying tax on all the interest at withdrawal$126,136
Tax deferral alone adds about$674
MYGA ahead of the CD, after tax$5,055

Assumes 22% federal and 0% state income tax, no withdrawals, rates held for the whole term. MYGA interest is taxed as ordinary income when you withdraw it, not as capital gains. Gains taken before age 59 1/2 can owe a 10% IRS penalty, and cashing out early can cost a surrender charge.

In an IRA both grow tax-deferred, so the edge there is the rate alone. Bank and credit union deposits are FDIC or NCUA insured up to the limits; a MYGA is backed by the issuing insurer's claims-paying ability and your state's guaranty association up to its limits, not the FDIC. General education, not tax, legal or financial advice.

Hypothetical: does the bonus version pay more income?

Hypothetical, for illustration only, not an Athene illustration. Age 60, $100,000, no withdrawals, income starts after 10 years at the Level payout. Bonus version: Income Base $125,000 plus 10 years of 10% simple interest on $100,000 = $225,000, times 7.50% = $16,875 a year.

Regular Ascent Pro 10: $100,000 plus $100,000 = $200,000, times 8.40% = $16,800 a year. On Athene's October 4, 2026 numbers the two land within $75 a year of each other, while the bonus version has the higher withdrawal charges, the vesting schedule and the lower cap and fixed rate.

Pros and cons

10% free withdrawals from the first contract year.Withdrawal charge starts at 12% in most states, plus an MVA.
Bailout: if the S&P 500 cap is set below 1.00%, a 30-day window to leave without charges.Cap and fixed rate are lower than the non-bonus Ascent Pro 10 on the same date.

Who it's for, and when to look elsewhere

Fits: a buyer aged roughly 50 to 70 who will take lifetime income from the rider, holds the contract at least 10 years, and has run the Ascent Pro 10 Bonus and the regular Ascent Pro 10 side by side at their own age and start date.

Questions to ask your agent

  1. What are the minimum cap, minimum participation rates and Minimum Guaranteed Contract Value in my Certificate of Disclosure? Please give them to me in writing.
  2. Which state schedule applies to me: show the full withdrawal charge and bonus vesting schedule by year, how the MVA works, and my 10% free withdrawal amount.
  3. Run the same illustration on the regular Ascent Pro 10. What is the income difference at my start age, and what is the cash value difference at years 5 and 10?
  4. How much will the 1.00% rider charge total in dollars over 10 years on my Income Base?
  5. How are you paid on this product? Commission comes from Athene and is built into the product's pricing, not deducted from my premium. What percentage is it on the bonus version versus the regular version, and does the longer surrender schedule pay you more? (Background: how annuity commissions work.)

From my desk

On a bonus income annuity I check three things before anything else: which state's withdrawal charge and vesting column applies, the dollar cost of the rider charge over 10 years, and the payout factor at the age the buyer will really start income. Those three decide whether the bonus is worth anything.

The number buyers misread most on this type of product is the 10% simple roll-up. It is not a return on your money. It grows the Income Base, which has no cash value, and it is simple interest on premium, so it does not compound. Meanwhile the cash value is paying the 1.00% charge.

Against a MYGA, I put the guaranteed column of the illustration next to a MYGA compounding at its declared rate for the same term. If the buyer will never turn income on, the MYGA usually wins that comparison on the published numbers. If lifetime income is the goal, I compare the bonus and non-bonus versions first, because on Athene's current numbers the bonus mostly offsets a lower payout factor.
