CD vs MYGA, after tax
Rates used: CD 5.00%, the top nationally available 5-year CD (Bankrate, October 14, 2026); change it to the rate you are offered. MYGA 5.95%, the best A-rated rate we track as of October 13, 2026: Delaware Life Pinnacle Plus 5-year (AM Best A-, negative outlook, 7/31/2026), $100,000 and up, effective October 6, 2026 (Delaware Life rate sheet).
| CD, interest taxed every year | $121,081 |
|---|---|
| MYGA, tax-deferred, before tax | $133,507 |
| MYGA after paying tax on all the interest at withdrawal | $126,136 |
| Tax deferral alone adds about | $674 |
| MYGA ahead of the CD, after tax | $5,055 |
Assumes 22% federal and 0% state income tax, no withdrawals, rates held for the whole term. MYGA interest is taxed as ordinary income when you withdraw it, not as capital gains. Gains taken before age 59 1/2 can owe a 10% IRS penalty, and cashing out early can cost a surrender charge. In an IRA both grow tax-deferred, so the edge there is the rate alone. Bank and credit union deposits are FDIC or NCUA insured up to the limits; a MYGA is backed by the issuing insurer's claims-paying ability and your state's guaranty association up to its limits, not the FDIC. As of September 25, 2026, after the Fed's 2024-2025 cuts and a 0.25-point hike on September 16, 2026 (target 3.75-4.00%), 5%+ APY on non-callable CDs is not available from the nationally advertised leaders. The market is no longer awash in 5% CDs as it was during the 2023 peak rate environment. Where rates stood on September 25, 2026:
The honest read: 5%+ on non-callable, no-strings-attached CDs requires either promotional rates (which expire), credit union memberships (which require qualification), or specific brokered CD issuance windows (which are temporary).

Credit unions periodically run aggressive promotional certificates as member acquisition tools. Recent examples:
How to find them: search "credit union CD special" plus your state, or use aggregator sites like DepositAccounts.com which track promotional rates daily. Most promotional rates last 4-12 weeks before the credit union returns to standard rates.
On September 25, 2026 the top of the CD curve was roughly flat from 6 months to 5 years (about 4.50% APY at the leaders). Brokered specials, when they appear, tend to cluster at 3-9 month maturities. Specific issuers (Goldman Sachs Bank USA, Morgan Stanley Bank N.A., Sallie Mae Bank, certain regional banks running funding drives) periodically post above-market rates on short new issues. These appear and disappear daily on Fidelity and Schwab CD OneSource.
Higher headline rates on 10-15 year callable CDs are common. As covered in our callable CD trap guide, these are almost always called within 1-3 years when rates fall. Treat them as 1-year CDs with a possible windfall, not as long-term yield locks.
Online banks periodically run aggressive promotions to attract new deposits. On September 24, 2026, Marcus's best CD was 4.35% (18 months to 6 years), Synchrony's 4.35% (60 months) and Ally's 4.25% (18 months). These typically have new-customer requirements or balance limits ($1K minimum, no maximum but the rate may step down at $100K+).
The 2022-2023 rate environment was unusually depositor-friendly. The Fed had raised the federal funds rate from near-zero to 5.25-5.50% in a compressed 18-month window. Banks scrambled to retain and acquire deposits, posting 5-6% CD rates across the board. By September 2026, the best nationally available CDs sat at about 4.35-4.55% APY (DepositAccounts, September 25, 2026).
A return to 5.5-6% retail CD rates would likely take a sustained Fed tightening cycle. The Fed's 0.25-point hike on September 16, 2026 has not, so far, pushed top CDs back to 5%.
For locked-rate, non-callable yields above 5% over 3+ years, the CD market underdelivered as of September 2026. The yields exist only on callable long-dated CDs (which won't deliver the headline rate) or short-term promotional windows (which won't deliver the duration).
The alternative: A-rated 5-year multi-year guaranteed annuities paid 5.50-6.05% on October 14, 2026 (public carrier rate sheets) without callable risk. The trade-offs:
For the slice of fixed-income allocation you've decided to lock for 5+ years anyway, MYGAs structurally win on yield. Splitting across 2-3 carriers gives you guaranty fund coverage on each layer. The combined experience: more yield, more diversification, and no callable risk, at the cost of liquidity flexibility.
A retiree has $200,000 in cash and wants to maximize yield over the next 5 years without committing to anything callable. Sample current-market construction:
| Tranche | Amount | Product | Yield (September 24-25, 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Liquid emergency fund | $25,000 | HYSA at Marcus or Ally | 3.00-3.50% |
| 6-month brokered CD | $25,000 | Top nationally available 6-month CD (e.g., HAB Bank) | 4.15-4.50% |
| 1-year CD ladder slice | $25,000 | Top nationally available 1-year CD | 4.35-4.50% |
| 2-year CD ladder slice | $25,000 | Top nationally available 2-year CD | 4.25-4.45% |
| 5-year tranche (option A) | $100,000 | Top nationally available 5-year CD | 4.25-4.50% |
| 5-year tranche (option B) | $100,000 | 5-year MYGA from A-rated carrier | 5.50-6.05% |
The 5-year tranche choice is where the meaningful yield decision lives. The MYGA option delivers ~$5,000-$11,000 more interest over the 5-year period than the CD option, on the same $100K, with comparable safety (state guaranty fund + A-rated carrier vs FDIC). The cost: surrender charges if liquidated early. For money that's earmarked for the full 5 years anyway, the MYGA structurally wins.
5% CDs exist but require effort and timing. For passive deposit allocation, the big online banks paid 3.90-4.35% and the best nationally available CDs 4.35-4.55% in late September 2026. Active hunters can sometimes beat that with a limited-time credit union or brokered special, but no nationally listed CD reached 5% on September 25, 2026. For locked rates above 5% over multi-year horizons without callable risk, the CD market generally won't deliver, and MYGAs from A-rated carriers are the structural alternative worth comparing in every conversation about money you'd otherwise lock up for 3-7 years.
