Your HYSA lives at one online bank. Your everyday checking lives elsewhere — say Chase, Wells Fargo, or your local credit union. To move money between them, the HYSA bank needs to know your checking account's routing number and account number, and verify you own it.
There are two verification methods:
Once verified, the external account is linked. You can initiate transfers in either direction (push or pull).
| HYSA Bank | External Account Link Limit (2026) |
|---|---|
| Marcus by Goldman Sachs | Up to 4 external accounts |
| Ally Bank | Up to 20 external accounts (highest in market) |
| SoFi | Up to 10 external accounts |
| Discover | Up to 3 external accounts |
| American Express | Up to 3 external accounts |
| Synchrony | Up to 3 external accounts |
| Capital One 360 | Up to 3 external accounts |
| CIT Bank | Up to 5 external accounts |
| Barclays | Up to 3 external accounts |
| Citizens Access | Up to 3 external accounts |
Caveat: limits change. Always confirm with your bank before opening additional accounts.
Linking multiple accounts doesn't increase your aggregate transfer limit. Most HYSAs have a daily or monthly outbound ACH cap that applies regardless of how many external accounts are linked. Typical limits (2026):
For amounts above the daily ACH limit, you'll need a wire transfer ($15-30 fee, same-day settlement).
The other direction works too. You can have ONE checking account at, say, Chase, and link it as an external account at Marcus, Ally, SoFi, and Discover HYSAs simultaneously. Then push/pull from each HYSA via the same Chase account. This is the standard setup for savers who keep multiple HYSAs to maximize APY and FDIC coverage.
Usually no, if the HYSA is a personal account. Most personal HYSAs require the linked external account to be in the same legal name. If you need to move money between business and personal, use a personal checking as an intermediary, or open a business HYSA (separate product — Live Oak Bank, Axos Bank, BlueVine are common choices for business HYSAs).
No. FDIC insurance applies to the deposits at each insured bank, not to the linked external accounts. Your $250K at Marcus is FDIC-insured; your $250K at Ally is FDIC-insured separately. Linking is purely a transfer mechanism — it doesn't affect coverage.
Yes at most HYSAs, as long as the credit union supports external ACH (almost all do). The verification works the same — micro-deposits or Plaid. Be aware some credit unions have additional security checks that delay first transfers.
Plaid instant verification: under 1 minute. Micro-deposit verification: 1-3 business days (deposits sent immediately, but external bank may take 1-2 days to post them). After verification, first transfers usually clear in 1-3 business days; subsequent transfers may settle faster.
Only if the HYSA is a joint account, or if the spouse's checking is in the same legal name. Otherwise the link will be rejected. The cleaner solution is to open the HYSA jointly so both spouses appear as owners — that doubles FDIC coverage to $500K and lets either spouse link their own checking.
Usually no. Once verified, the link persists indefinitely. Some banks re-verify automatically every 6-12 months in the background. You'll only need to re-verify manually if the external account's routing number changes (rare — typically due to bank mergers) or if you close and reopen the external account.
Yes. Brokerage cash management accounts have routing/account numbers and can be linked exactly like a checking account. This is useful for moving cash between an HYSA and a brokerage's settlement fund (e.g., to buy Treasuries or CDs through the brokerage).
Compare your HYSA APY against current MYGA rates — free, independent.
HYSA rates move every month with the Fed. If you want a rate locked for 3, 5, 7, or 10 years on cash you won't touch, a MYGA (multi-year guaranteed annuity) is the closest equivalent. Current top MYGA rates: 5.40-5.75% for 3-5 year terms, fixed. Tax-deferred. State guaranty fund backed.
Drop your info — within 24 hours, you'll get current MYGA rates side-by-side with your HYSA, surrender schedules, carrier ratings, and a no-pressure 15-minute call if you want one.
