Short answer: most drivers with common conditions (treated blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, extra weight) can still get life insurance; the question is the class and the carrier. Well-controlled, documented conditions do best, and some carriers are friendlier than others on specific conditions. Your DOT medical card history can help: it shows a doctor checks you regularly. Apply with the carrier whose guidelines fit your condition, not the first quote.

How the DOT medical card connects to life underwriting

Commercial drivers must be medically examined and certified at least every 24 months, and drivers with insulin-treated diabetes every 12 months (49 CFR 391.45). The physical standards bar a current diagnosis of high blood pressure or respiratory dysfunction likely to interfere with safe driving (49 CFR 391.41). For life insurance, that history cuts both ways: regular exams document control, and any condition that shortened your certification period will be asked about.

How to apply with a condition

What to do this week
  1. Write down diagnoses, dates, medications and your last few readings or A1c results.
  2. Gather your DOT medical card dates and any short-interval certifications.
  3. Ask your agent to shop the case informally with two or three carriers before a formal application.
  4. Apply first with the carrier whose guidelines fit your condition; a decline elsewhere has to be disclosed later.
  5. If you cannot schedule an exam, ask about accelerated or simplified options that fit your condition.

If you are declined or rated

A table rating raises the premium in steps of about 25% of standard mortality. It can still be worth it. Options include a smaller face, term instead of permanent, a carrier with a friendlier guideline, or a simplified-issue product. Guaranteed-issue coverage and accidental death insurance are last resorts, because they cover less (AD&D vs life insurance).

Frequently asked questions

Can truck drivers with high blood pressure get life insurance?
Usually yes. Treated, stable blood pressure often qualifies for standard rates or better, and some carriers allow treated blood pressure at preferred classes.
Can I get life insurance with sleep apnea?
Often yes, especially with documented treatment such as consistent CPAP use. Severity and treatment compliance drive the decision.
Does insulin-treated diabetes affect life insurance for drivers?
It is a significant underwriting factor. DOT rules require drivers with insulin-treated diabetes to be recertified every 12 months, and insurers will ask about control and complications.
Does my DOT physical help my life insurance application?
It can, because it documents regular medical checks. Any condition that shortened your certification period will be asked about.
What if I get a table rating?
Each table adds about 25% to expected mortality. Consider a smaller face, term, or a carrier with friendlier guidelines for your condition.
