Verdict: for most people, life insurance first. Life insurance pays for almost any cause of death after the first two years; accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) pays only when an accident is the cause, under a list of exclusions. Accidents are 37.7% of deaths at ages 25 to 44 but only 3.0% at 65 and older (CDC, 2022), so AD&D covers a shrinking slice of risk as you age. AD&D is a reasonable add-on or a fallback for someone who cannot qualify for life insurance.

In 2024 there were 197,449 unintentional injury deaths in the US, the No. 3 cause of death overall (CDC Data Brief 548). That is a real risk for a 30-year-old. For a 68-year-old, an AD&D policy would have paid on about 3 of every 100 deaths in that age group.

The exclusions that decide most claims

AD&D policies commonly exclude illness or disease (including an illness that led to the accident), suicide, war and military service, intoxication and drug use, felonies, speed contests, non-passenger aviation and hazardous sports. Many also require death within a set time after the accident, within a window the policy sets. Read the exclusion list before you count on it.

When AD&D makes sense

For a healthy person, the same monthly dollars usually buy far more protection as term life insurance, because term pays for heart attacks, cancer and strokes too. Accidental death insurance guide · Is accidental death insurance worth it? · Term life.

Hans's decision order

  1. Can you qualify for term or permanent life insurance? Buy that first, sized to the need.
  2. Have accident exposure on top? Add AD&D as a rider or a small policy.
  3. Cannot qualify for life insurance at all? Guaranteed-issue AD&D or guaranteed-issue whole life are the fallbacks; compare what each pays for.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between AD&D and life insurance?
Life insurance pays for almost any cause of death. AD&D pays only for death from an accident, within a time window, if no exclusion applies, and may pay part of the benefit for loss of a limb or sight.
Is AD&D worth it?
As a cheap add-on or a fallback when you cannot qualify for life insurance, it can be. It is not a substitute for life insurance for a healthy person.
Does AD&D cover heart attacks or strokes?
Generally no. Illness and disease are standard exclusions, including an illness that caused the accident.
Why does AD&D matter less as you get older?
Accidents were 37.7% of deaths at ages 25 to 44 but 3.0% at 65 and older in 2022, according to the CDC.
Should I keep the AD&D from my employer?
If it is free or very cheap, usually yes, but do not count it as your life insurance.
