Editorial review by a licensed agent who may earn a commission. No insurer pays for placement or grades. Hans is paid a commission by the insurer if you buy a policy through him. For life insurance, ask and he will tell you what he earns on your specific policy.

Short answer: the best term policy is the one that is still useful if your health changes. Hans ranks term on four things, in order: how long and how broadly it can convert to permanent coverage, the living benefits on your state's form, the carrier's strength, and then price. Price comes last because quotes for healthy applicants tend to cluster, while conversion rules differ by years. Below, carriers are ranked on conversion windows from public compilations; prices are quoted for you individually.

The best term policy is the one that is still useful if your health changes. Yeah, I mean, it really is a completely different way to look at buying coverage. Usually, you know, we're just taught to hunt for the cheapest premium and leave it at that. Right. So today our mission on this deep dive is exploring a page called Best Term Life Insurance Ranked by What Matters at Year 20. It was written by Hans Goldstein, an independent licensed insurance producer, and his framework really just flips the script on how we shop. It does. Yeah. Hans basically ranks term policies on four things in order. First is how long and how broadly it can convert to permanent coverage. Then it's the living benefits on your state's form. Then the carrier's strength. And then finally price. Only about 4.9% of 10-year term converts in its final year per the SOA/LIMRA 2026 term conversion study as of 2026-05. Wait, just 4.9%? Yeah, it's incredibly low. If you look at the April 2024 compilation rankings, rank one is Mutual of Omaha Term Life Answers. And what's their window? It's the earlier of the 10, 15, or 20-year term or age 75. And for their 30-year, it's the first 20 years. So they give you plenty of runway. Right. They do. By contrast, look at a company like Ladder. They have none. It is not convertible at all.

Why conversion comes first

Most term never pays a claim because it ends or lapses. The moment term matters most is when your health has changed and you still need coverage: conversion is the only way to permanent insurance without new underwriting. Yet only about 4.9% of 10-year term converts in its final year (SOA/LIMRA 2026). A longer, broader conversion right is insurance on your insurance.

Why there is no "top 10 by price" here

Term prices change often and depend on your age, class and state, so a published price ranking is stale the day it is written. A list built on the features that are in the contract, dated and sourced, is more useful. How the Goldstein Index grades term.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best term life insurance?
By Hans's criteria, the best term policy has a long, broad conversion right, good living benefits on your state's form, a strong carrier and a competitive price, in that order.
Which term life insurance has the longest conversion period?
In the April 2024 compilation, Mutual of Omaha Term Life Answers converts until the earlier of the end of the term or age 75, later than the common age-70 cutoff.
Is all term life insurance convertible?
No. Some term, such as Ladder's, cannot be converted. Others limit conversion to the first 5 or 10 years.
Why not just buy the cheapest term?
For healthy applicants, quotes often cluster. Conversion rights differ by years and matter most if your health changes.
Are these conversion rules current?
They come from an April 2024 carrier compilation (secondary source). Rules change and differ by product and state, so check your policy's conversion provision.
