Short answer: term life covers you for a set period (10 to 30 years) at a level premium, and it is the cheapest way to buy a large death benefit. Three moments decide whether it served you well: the day you buy it (price and convertibility), the conversion deadline (the last day you can switch to permanent coverage without new medical questions), and the end of the level period, when the premium can jump many times over.

Moment 1: buying it

Price matters, but two less visible features matter more over 20 years. First, convertibility: can you switch to permanent coverage later, until when, and into which products? Second, living benefits: some term policies let you accelerate part of the death benefit for a terminal, chronic or critical illness, and the details differ by state. Start with how Hans picks term (conversion first), no-exam options and what happens at the paramed exam.

Moment 2: the conversion deadline

Conversion lets you turn term into permanent coverage at your original health class, with no new exam. Most carriers set the deadline at the earlier of the end of the level period or age 70, and some are much shorter: a 5-year window on some products, "level period minus 2 years" on others (Tritium compilation, April 2024). Miss it and the only way to permanent coverage is new underwriting at your age and health that day.

Moment 3: the level period ends

When the level period ends, most policies switch to annually increasing premiums. In one carrier's own illustration (male 45, $250,000), the premium was $372 a year for 20 years and $10,210 in year 21, about 27 times higher (Pacific Life sample illustration). Costs, reviews and decisions

Hans's opinion, not a rule: term is the right first purchase for most young families with a tight budget, and convertible term is the right kind of term. Buy the coverage you need now, then convert part of it to permanent coverage when the budget allows.

Frequently asked questions

How long does term life insurance last?
Usually 10, 15, 20 or 30 years at a level premium. After that most policies can continue at annually increasing premiums until a stated age, often 90 to 95.
What is the most important feature of a term policy?
Besides price, convertibility: the right to switch to permanent coverage at your original health class without a new exam, before a deadline set in the policy.
When is the term conversion deadline?
Most commonly the earlier of the end of the level period or age 70, but some products allow only 5 or 10 years, and a few term policies cannot be converted at all.
What happens to the premium after the level period?
It usually jumps to an annual renewable rate. In one carrier's illustration for a 45-year-old man, the premium went from $372 a year to $10,210 in year 21.
Is term life insurance worth it?
For a temporary need on a tight budget, yes. It pays only if you die during the term, and it has no cash value.
