Short answer: accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) insurance pays only when an accident causes death or certain injuries, within a time window and outside a list of exclusions. It comes four ways: free or cheap through an employer or credit card, as a rider on life insurance, as a standalone guaranteed-issue policy, or with a return-of-premium feature. It is a useful supplement and a fallback for people who cannot qualify for life insurance, not a substitute for it.

How much risk it covers, by age

Unintentional injury was 37.7% of deaths at ages 25 to 44, 10.9% at 45 to 64 and 3.0% at 65 and older in 2022 (CDC NVSR 73-10). That is why AD&D is priced low: as you age, it pays on a smaller share of deaths.

Exclusions to read first

Illness or disease (including illness that caused the accident), suicide, war and military service, intoxication and drug use, felonies, speed contests, non-passenger aviation and hazardous sports are common exclusions. Many policies also require death within a set period after the accident. Common-carrier riders may pay extra for deaths as a fare-paying passenger.

Frequently asked questions

What is AD&D insurance?
Accidental death and dismemberment insurance pays when an accident causes death or certain injuries such as loss of a limb or sight, subject to exclusions and time windows.
Is AD&D the same as life insurance?
No. Life insurance pays for almost any cause of death. AD&D pays only for accidents.
Who should buy standalone AD&D?
People who cannot qualify for life insurance and want some coverage, or people with accident exposure who already have life insurance.
Does AD&D cover illness?
No. Illness and disease are standard exclusions, including an illness that caused the accident.
Is there AD&D with return of premium?
Yes, some carriers offer a return-of-premium rider for extra premium; the refund is small or zero in early years.
