Annuity 1099-R Explained (2026 Form): Boxes, Distribution Codes and Where It Goes on Form 1040

Box and code definitions checked against the IRS's 2026 Form 1099-R instructions · Updated

Your annuity 1099-R tells the IRS how much came out (box 1), how much is taxable (box 2a), and why (the distribution code in box 7). A 1035 exchange shows code 6 and is not taxable. Annuity distributions go on Form 1040 lines 5a/5b; IRA distributions on 4a/4b.

Correction (September 24, 2026): this page used to say annuity 1099-R amounts go on Form 1040 "lines 4 and 5 (or 8 and 9 for IRA)." Pensions and annuities are lines 5a/5b; IRA distributions are lines 4a/4b.

CD vs MYGA, after tax

What $100,000 earns in 5 years: CD vs MYGA, after tax

Rates used: CD 5.00%, the top nationally available 5-year CD (Bankrate, October 14, 2026); change it to the rate you are offered. MYGA 5.95%, the best A-rated rate we track as of October 13, 2026: Delaware Life Pinnacle Plus 5-year (AM Best A-, negative outlook, 7/31/2026), $100,000 and up, effective October 6, 2026 (Delaware Life rate sheet).

CD, interest taxed every year$121,081
MYGA, tax-deferred, before tax$133,507
MYGA after paying tax on all the interest at withdrawal$126,136
Tax deferral alone adds about$674
MYGA ahead of the CD, after tax$5,055

Assumes 22% federal and 0% state income tax, no withdrawals, rates held for the whole term. MYGA interest is taxed as ordinary income when you withdraw it, not as capital gains. Gains taken before age 59 1/2 can owe a 10% IRS penalty, and cashing out early can cost a surrender charge.

In an IRA both grow tax-deferred, so the edge there is the rate alone. Bank and credit union deposits are FDIC or NCUA insured up to the limits; a MYGA is backed by the issuing insurer's claims-paying ability and your state's guaranty association up to its limits, not the FDIC. Is the annuity you're looking at actually the best one available?

Send your email and I'll send what it really guarantees, what the surrender schedule costs you, and the two or three carriers paying more for the same guarantee. If it's already a good fit, I'll tell you that.

Frequently asked questions

What does code 7 mean on a 1099-R from an annuity?

Normal distribution. The IRS instructions say code 7 is used to report a distribution from an annuity contract, and for plans and IRAs when the taxpayer is at least 59½. It is the default when no other code applies.

What does code 6 mean?

A section 1035 exchange: a tax-free exchange of life insurance, annuity, long-term care insurance or endowment contracts. It is reported but not taxable.

What does code D mean?

Annuity payments from nonqualified annuities, and distributions from life insurance contracts, that may be subject to the 3.8% net investment income tax under section 1411. It is used with another code such as 1, 2, 4 or 7.

Where do I report an annuity 1099-R on Form 1040?

Pension and annuity distributions go on lines 5a (gross) and 5b (taxable). Distributions from an IRA, including an IRA-owned annuity, go on lines 4a and 4b.

Do I owe the 10% additional tax on an early annuity withdrawal?

Possibly, on the taxable part, if you are under 59½ and no exception applies (section 72(q) for nonqualified annuities, 72(t) for IRAs and plans). Code 1 means no known exception; code 2 means the payer knows one applies. Use Form 5329 to claim an exception the payer did not show.
