CD vs MYGA, after tax

What $100,000 earns in 5 years: CD vs MYGA, after tax

Rates used: CD 5.00%, the top nationally available 5-year CD (Bankrate, October 14, 2026); change it to the rate you are offered. MYGA 5.95%, the best A-rated rate we track as of October 13, 2026: Delaware Life Pinnacle Plus 5-year (AM Best A-, negative outlook, 7/31/2026), $100,000 and up, effective October 6, 2026 (Delaware Life rate sheet).

CD, interest taxed every year$121,081
MYGA, tax-deferred, before tax$133,507
MYGA after paying tax on all the interest at withdrawal$126,136
Tax deferral alone adds about$674
MYGA ahead of the CD, after tax$5,055

Assumes 22% federal and 0% state income tax, no withdrawals, rates held for the whole term. MYGA interest is taxed as ordinary income when you withdraw it, not as capital gains. Gains taken before age 59 1/2 can owe a 10% IRS penalty, and cashing out early can cost a surrender charge.

In an IRA both grow tax-deferred, so the edge there is the rate alone. Bank and credit union deposits are FDIC or NCUA insured up to the limits; a MYGA is backed by the issuing insurer's claims-paying ability and your state's guaranty association up to its limits, not the FDIC. Base vs Plus

FeatureBasePlus

Free withdrawals10% of accumulated value10%, or up to 20% if none taken the prior year
Return of premiumNoAfter year 4, cash surrender value never below premium less prior withdrawals

Run the math on the Plus: 0.95% a year for 7 years is roughly 6.4% of value, about the size of the bonus it buys. The Plus is worth it only if you value the extra liquidity and the return-of-premium floor.

Contract basics

Correction: an earlier version of this page put caps at "5-6% typical." Athene's current guide shows 9.75% (no charge) to 12.75% (with charge) on the S&P 500 1-year cap.

For comparison, A-rated-or-better insurers were paying about 5.50% to 6.05% on 5-year MYGAs and the best nationally available 5-year CDs about 4.70% to 5.00% APY (MYGAs: public carrier rate sheets, October 14, 2026; CDs: Bankrate and Popular Direct, October 18, 2026).

Frequently asked questions

What are Athene Performance Elite 7 rates right now?

On Athene's guide effective September 25, 2026: S&P 500 1-year point-to-point cap 9.75% with no strategy charge or 12.75% with a 1.25% strategy charge; 1-year fixed 4.85% (3.00% in California); uncapped participation rates up to 300% (2-year BNP Paribas MAD 5, no charge) or 375% with the strategy charge.

What is the difference between Performance Elite 7 and 7 Plus?

Plus adds a liquidity rider for a 0.95% annual charge during the 7-year withdrawal charge period. It brings a premium bonus (6% in most states, 5% in California and 20 other states), enhanced free withdrawals of up to 20% if none were taken the prior year, and a return-of-premium floor after year 4.

Is the Performance Elite 7 Plus bonus real money?

It is credited to accumulated value, but it vests over time. In most states 0% is vested in year 1, rising to 100% in year 8; California vests 5% in year 1 and 100% in year 8. Surrender early and the unvested part is taken back.

What is the Performance Elite 7 surrender schedule?

9.0%, 8.8%, 7.9%, 6.9%, 5.9%, 5.0%, 4.0%, then 0% from year 8. California: 9.0%, 8.0%, 6.9%, 5.8%, 4.7%, 3.6%, 2.4%. A market value adjustment applies to withdrawals above the free amount.

Is Performance Elite 7 better than a MYGA?

Different job. The FIA can credit more than a MYGA in strong index years and 0% in weak ones, and its caps reset yearly. A 5-year MYGA locks one rate for the term: about 5.50%-6.05% from A-rated carriers on October 14, 2026.
