Short answer
Ally Bank's high-yield savings account pays 3.10% APY on every balance as of October 13, 2026, up from 3.00% on September 24, with no minimum deposit and no monthly maintenance fee. Its edge is tools, not rate: buckets, round ups and Surprise Savings. The rate is variable, withdrawals are limited to 10 per statement cycle, and Marcus (3.50%, October 13) and Synchrony (3.55%, October 3) paid more.
Savings account vs MYGA, after tax
Rates used: Savings account 3.10%, Ally Online Savings (ally.com, rate dated October 13, 2026); savings rates can change any day; change it to the rate you are offered. MYGA 5.95%, the best A-rated rate we track as of October 13, 2026: Delaware Life Pinnacle Plus 5-year (AM Best A-, negative outlook, 7/31/2026), $100,000 and up, effective October 6, 2026 (Delaware Life rate sheet).
| Savings account, interest taxed every year | $112,689 |
|---|---|
| MYGA, tax-deferred, before tax | $133,507 |
| MYGA after paying tax on all the interest at withdrawal | $126,136 |
| Tax deferral alone adds about | $674 |
| MYGA ahead of the savings account, after tax | $13,447 |
Assumes 22% federal and 0% state income tax, no withdrawals, rates held for the whole term. MYGA interest is taxed as ordinary income when you withdraw it, not as capital gains. Gains taken before age 59 1/2 can owe a 10% IRS penalty, and cashing out early can cost a surrender charge. In an IRA both grow tax-deferred, so the edge there is the rate alone. Bank and credit union deposits are FDIC or NCUA insured up to the limits; a MYGA is backed by the issuing insurer's claims-paying ability and your state's guaranty association up to its limits, not the FDIC. General education, not tax, legal or financial advice.

| SoFi Savings (with direct deposit) | 3.30% APY, variable | rate current as of Sept 23, 2026 |
| Capital One 360 Performance Savings | 3.10% APY, variable | Oct 3, 2026 |
| Ally High Yield CD, top term (18 months) | 4.25% APY, fixed | Oct 13, 2026 |
| FDIC national average, savings | 0.37% APY | Sept 21, 2026 |
| A-rated-or-better 5-year MYGAs | ~5.50%-6.05%, fixed | October 14, 2026 |
Yes for usability, middling for rate. On October 13, 2026 Ally paid 3.10% APY, more than eight times the FDIC national savings average of 0.37% (September 21, 2026), with no fees and the best organizing tools of the big online banks. But Marcus paid 3.50% the same day and Synchrony 3.55% on October 3, so on $50,000 Ally earns roughly $200 to $225 a year less than those two.
It depends on direct deposit. SoFi pays 3.30% APY only with eligible direct deposit or $5,000 of qualifying deposits every 31 days, and 0.80% without; new members can get a 0.90% boost to 4.20% for up to six months (SoFi, rate current as of September 23, 2026). Ally pays 3.10% with no conditions. If your paycheck already goes to SoFi, SoFi wins; if not, Ally is simpler. Full detail in the SoFi HYSA review.
About $310 in a year at 3.10% APY, if the variable rate held (October 13, 2026). The same $10,000 at 3.55% would make about $355. Interest compounds daily and is taxed every year as ordinary income.

When people show me their Ally balance, it is usually more than an emergency fund. Ally's buckets make it easy to keep "house money," "tax money" and "someday money" in one place, and the someday bucket tends to grow for years at a variable rate. That bucket is the one I look at.
For money that will sit three to five years, the comparison I run is Ally's 3.10% variable rate, taxed every year, against a fixed 5-year MYGA, taxed only when withdrawn.
Example ($250,000, 5 years, 24% federal bracket): if 3.10% held, Ally would end near $280,900 after tax; a 5-year MYGA at 5.50% (public carrier rate sheets, October 14, 2026) ends near $308,300 after tax paid at the end. A MYGA rate is guaranteed by the issuing insurer and backed by its claims-paying ability, not the FDIC, and has surrender charges, so emergency money stays at Ally. See Marcus vs Ally and HYSA vs money market fund.

A savings account is the right home for emergency money. For money you will not need for three to five years, a multi-year guaranteed annuity fixes a higher rate and defers the tax.
| $250,000 for 5 years | Ally Savings (if 3.10% held all 5 years) | 5-yr MYGA at 5.50% |
|---|---|---|
| Rate | 3.10% APY, variable | 5.50% (fixed for the term) |
| Tax on interest | Every year (1099-INT) | Deferred until withdrawn |
| Value after 5 years, after 24% federal tax | ~$280,900 | ~$308,300 (tax paid at the end) |
| Protection | FDIC, $250K per ownership category | Insurer claims-paying ability + state guaranty association (limits vary by state) |
| Getting out early | See the account terms | Surrender charge above the free-withdrawal amount; IRS 10% penalty before 59½ |
About $27,400 more after tax on the MYGA (24% federal bracket, state tax ignored). The savings rate is not fixed, so the real gap depends on where it goes. Fixed annuity benchmark: carriers rated A or better topped out around 5.50% to 6.05% on 5-year compound-interest MYGAs, per public carrier rate sheets, October 14, 2026. Rates vary by state, premium and carrier.

Yes. Ally Bank (FDIC cert 57803) is FDIC-insured up to $250,000 per depositor, per ownership category.
At 3.10% (October 3, 2026) it matches Capital One 360 Performance Savings and American Express (3.10%) but trails Synchrony (3.55%) and Marcus (3.50%). Ally’s own High Yield CDs topped out at 4.25% APY (18 months) on October 13, 2026.
For 3-to-5-year money, a MYGA usually pays more and fixes the rate: A-rated-or-better insurers paid roughly 5.50%-6.05% on 5-year MYGAs on October 14, 2026, tax-deferred. If Ally's 3.10% held for five years, $250,000 would end about $31,000 behind a 5.50% MYGA after 24% federal tax. Keep emergency money in savings.
Yes. Ally says there is a limit of 10 withdrawals per statement cycle on its savings account (ally.com, October 3, 2026).
Ally Savings is a fee-free, well-built account paying 3.10% APY (October 13, 2026). Use it for cash you may need; for money parked a year or more, Ally's 12 to 18 month CDs pay more, and for three-to-five-year money a MYGA quote is worth getting.

A multi-year guaranteed annuity (MYGA) is the insurance version of a CD: one fixed rate for a set term. As of October 14, 2026, A-rated-or-better insurers were paying about 5.50% to 6.05% on 5-year MYGAs. The best nationally available 5-year CDs paid about 4.70% to 5.00% APY, and big-institution 5-year CDs less (as of September 24, 2026: Capital One 360 60-month 3.60%, Navy Federal 5-year 3.85 to 3.90%). A MYGA also defers the tax, where a CD or money market fund is taxed every year on interest you have not spent.
The trade is liquidity: breaking a MYGA early costs a surrender charge, not a few months of interest, and it is backed by the insurer and your state guaranty association rather than the FDIC. See the side-by-side · Current MYGA rates
