My IUL Is Lapsing: A Triage Plan Before the Grace Period Ends

Short answer: an IUL lapses when its cash value can no longer cover the monthly charges. In California, individual life policies get at least a 60-day grace period, and the insurer must send notice before the policy terminates, including to a designee if you named one. Use that time: pay at least the amount the notice asks for, then get an in-force illustration to see what it takes to stop it from happening again. Letting it lapse with a loan can also create a tax bill.
The deadline, in California
For life insurance issued or delivered in California, the grace period is at least 60 days from the premium due date, and the insurer must mail notice
of termination for nonpayment at least 30 days before it takes effect, to the owner, any designee named to receive notices, and known assignees (CA Ins. Code 10113.71;
10113.72). Coverage continues during the grace period. If you are caring for an older parent's policy, ask them to name you as the
lapse-notice designee now.

Most late-life IUL lapses come from the same mix: the policy was funded near the minimum (big death benefit, little cash), cost of insurance rose
with age, index credits came in below the illustration, and loans grew. The hockey-stick curve that makes a well-funded policy work never arrives for a
thin one. IUL problems when older.
Triage order
Stop the lapse now: pay the grace amount. It buys time; it does not fix the policy.
Read the in-force illustration on guaranteed and midpoint columns to see the real gap.
Close the gap with the cheapest lever that keeps the coverage you need: more premium, a lower face amount, switching Option B to A, or
dropping riders you do not need.
If loans are the problem, pay loan interest, or check for an overloan protection rider (overloan riders).
If the policy cannot be saved at a sensible cost, compare a reduced paid-up option, a 1035 exchange or a life settlement (for older
insureds with large policies) before surrendering.
Within one business day you get a written read: what the letter or statement means for your policy, the options, and the one to take first. No pressure to change anything.
How long is the grace period on life insurance in California?
At least 60 days for individual life policies, with written notice required at least 30 days before termination.
Why is my IUL lapsing?
Usually because the policy was funded near the minimum, cost of insurance rose with age, index credits came in below the illustration, or loans grew faster than cash value.
Can I save a lapsing IUL?
Often. Pay the grace amount, then use an in-force illustration to choose between more premium, a lower face, a death benefit option change or other levers.
Will I owe taxes if my IUL lapses?
If there is a loan and the loan plus any cash received exceeds your basis, the difference is generally taxable income.
Can a family member get the lapse notices?
Yes. California lets the owner designate someone to receive lapse notices, which is wise for older policyholders.
