Short answer: if you miss a premium, your policy enters a grace period (at least 60 days for individual life insurance in California) during which coverage continues. If the premium is not paid by the end, the policy lapses. Most policies can be reinstated within a set period, often a few years, by paying back premiums with interest and usually proving you are still insurable. On guaranteed UL, a late payment can shorten the guarantee even if the policy never lapses.

The guaranteed UL wrinkle

On a GUL, the death benefit guarantee depends on paying the planned premium on time. A late payment can shorten the guarantee even though the policy stays in force. Pacific Life's PL Promise GUL tolerates premiums up to one month early or late; beyond that, extra premium is needed to restore the guarantee (Pacific Life). Protective says missed or late payments may cause the policy to lose lapse protection (Protective). After any late payment on a GUL, request an in-force illustration to see the new guarantee age.

Prevent it

  1. Pay by automatic draft from an account that always has the money.
  2. Name a lapse-notice designee (California allows this) such as an adult child, especially for older policyholders.
  3. Keep the insurer updated with your address and email.
  4. If cash is tight, ask about a face reduction or a premium change before you miss a payment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the grace period for life insurance in California?
At least 60 days for individual life insurance, with written notice required before the policy terminates.
Is my life insurance still active during the grace period?
Yes. Coverage continues during the grace period; if you die, the death benefit is paid minus the overdue premium.
Can I reinstate a lapsed life insurance policy?
Often, within the reinstatement period in your contract, by paying back premiums with interest and usually proving insurability.
Does a late payment hurt a guaranteed universal life policy?
It can shorten the no-lapse guarantee even if the policy stays in force. Pacific Life's PL Promise GUL tolerates payments up to one month early or late.
Can someone else get my lapse notices?
Yes. California lets you designate another person to receive lapse notices.
