Short answer: guaranteed universal life (GUL) is permanent life insurance built for one job: a death benefit that stays in force to a chosen age (often 90 to 121) as long as you pay the required premium on time. It is usually the lowest-cost way to guarantee a death benefit for life, and it builds little or no cash value by design. That trade makes it a strong fit for estate plans and trusts, and a poor fit if you want money to borrow later.

What the guarantee actually is

A GUL is universal life with a no-lapse (secondary) guarantee. The real policy account can run to zero and the death benefit still stays in force, because the carrier tests a separate guarantee instead. Model regulation describes two designs (NAIC Model 830):

The guarantee is contractual and backed by the insurer's claims-paying ability. What it does not do is grow money for you. Protective's own guide says "cash value accumulation is unlikely" on its Lifetime Assurance UL (Protective).

Who still sells guaranteed UL in 2026

Fewer carriers sell GUL than a decade ago. Reserve rules for secondary guarantees made the product expensive to back, and several insurers have closed their GUL lines. What the carriers' own documents showed when we checked on October 3, 2026:

Some sources are carrier documents hosted by brokerage general agencies; availability changes, so confirm before applying. Survivorship GUL is scarcer still: Principal SUL Provider offers an extended no-lapse guarantee to the younger insured's age 100, and Pacific Life, Prudential, Lincoln, Nationwide, Securian and Corebridge list no survivorship GUL.

What breaks a GUL guarantee

  1. Paying late or short. Pacific Life tolerates premiums up to one month early or late. Outside that window the guarantee shortens and you need extra premium to restore it. Protective allows catch-up "with additional or higher premiums."
  2. Loans and withdrawals. They shorten the guarantee. A GUL is not a policy to borrow from.
  3. Changing the plan casually. Lowering the premium or skipping a year can move the guarantee from 121 to the early 90s without a phone call from anyone. Ask for an in-force illustration after any change.

Where GUL fits, and where it does not

Fits: an irrevocable life insurance trust that needs a known death benefit at the lowest known cost, estate liquidity, equalizing heirs, a pension maximization plan, or anyone 55 to 75 who just wants coverage that will not lapse at 88. ILIT guide · GUL vs IUL.

Does not fit: anyone who wants cash value to borrow against later, or who expects to pay irregularly. For cash value, compare indexed universal life or whole life.

Frequently asked questions

Does guaranteed universal life build cash value?
Very little, by design. Carriers say so in their own materials: Protective says cash value accumulation is unlikely, and Pacific Life says a policy kept in force only by the no-lapse guarantee will not build cash value.
What age can a GUL guarantee last to?
You choose it at issue. Pacific Life PL Promise GUL offers guarantees from age 90 up to lifetime (121), and Protective Lifetime Assurance UL from 90 to 121.
What happens if I miss a GUL premium?
The guarantee usually shortens rather than ending outright, and you may need extra premium to restore it. Pacific Life allows payments up to one month early or late without hurting the guarantee.
Is GUL good for an irrevocable life insurance trust?
Often yes. A trust usually needs a known death benefit at the lowest known cost and does not need cash value, which is exactly what a GUL is built for.
Is GUL cheaper than whole life?
For the same guaranteed death benefit, usually yes. In one published example a $500,000 Pacific Life GUL for a 40-year-old man cost $279.50 a month versus $737 for MassMutual whole life. Whole life buys guaranteed cash value as well.
