Verdict: Lifetime Assurance UL is Protective's guaranteed universal life policy: lapse protection you choose from age 90 to 121, from an insurer AM Best affirmed at A+ on 10/2/2026. What sets it apart is an optional return-of-premium endorsement, an exit door most GULs do not have. Like every GUL, it is a death-benefit tool; Protective says cash value accumulation is unlikely.

The feature that sets it apart: a way out

The usual objection to a GUL is that it is a one-way door. You pay for decades, the guarantee holds, and if your plans change there is little or no cash value to take with you. Protective offers a return-of-premium endorsement on Lifetime Assurance UL (Protective). The endorsement's exact terms (when it can be exercised, what share of premium comes back, and what it costs) live in the policy form and illustration, so ask to see them in writing. The value is optionality: an estate plan that may not be needed if the exemption stays high, or a buyer who is not sure the coverage will matter at 85.

That option is not free. It raises the premium versus the same guarantee without it. Whether it is worth it depends on how likely you are to want out, which is a personal call, not a math one.

The guarantee menu

Protective lets you set the guarantee to age 90, 95, 100, 105, 110 or 121, with issue ages 18 to 85 depending on class and state (Protective). Each step up in age costs more premium; the right choice is the age you are planning not to outlive, which for estate cases is usually 121. Protective's Indexed Choice UL was discontinued for new sales effective March 9, 2026 (WinFlex Protective notes), which leaves Lifetime Assurance UL as its guarantee-first permanent product. A survivorship version, Protective Survivor UL, appears in a 2023 guide, but its 2026 status is not confirmed.

Catch-up, in Protective's own words

Protective is unusually direct about late payments: "Failure to make premium payments as planned may cause the policy to lose lapse protection and premiums required to keep the policy in force could be significantly higher." Catch-up is allowed with "additional or higher premiums." Loans and withdrawals also shorten the protection. Translation: the guarantee is solid when you follow the plan, and repairable when you do not, at a price.
