Editorial review by a licensed agent who may earn a commission. No insurer pays for placement or grades. Hans is paid a commission by the insurer if you buy a policy through him. For life insurance, ask and he will tell you what he earns on your specific policy.

Short answer: Ethos is an online insurance agency, not an insurance company. Your policy is issued by one of its partner insurers, and that insurer's contract decides everything that matters later: conversion rights, living benefits, loans and claims. Ethos's IUL, launched in January 2026, is issued by North American Company, with Ameritas also named as an IUL partner. Read the first page of your policy to see your insurer, then judge the policy on that insurer's terms.

Agency vs insurer: why it matters

Ethos's January 2026 announcement describes an IUL issued by North American Company, and Ameritas is also named as an Ethos IUL partner (Ethos release, 1/7/2026). An agency's job is the application and the experience. The insurer's job is the contract: it sets the premium, the conversion rules, the riders and the claim process. Ratings belong to the insurer, so an Ethos policy is exactly as strong as the company named on it (North American review; Ameritas review).

Term conversion depends on the insurer

The April 2024 carrier compilation lists Ethos term conversion as "depends on issuing carrier" (Tritium). That is the single most important thing to check on any online term policy: whether it can be converted to permanent coverage, until what age or policy year, and into which products. Some online term cannot be converted at all (Ladder, for example). If your health changes, conversion is the only way to permanent coverage without new underwriting. How term conversion works.

What to check on an Ethos policy

  1. The issuing insurer on page one, and its current AM Best rating and date.
  2. The conversion clause: deadline, age limit, and eligible products.
  3. Living benefits: which triggers, whether discounted, and whether the California form differs.
  4. For IUL: the guaranteed minimum cap, the floor, loan types and charges, from that insurer's illustration.
  5. The free-look period, so you know how long you have to cancel for a refund if a review changes your mind.

Speed vs underwriting

Online agencies are built for fast decisions. Fast is good when the underwriting is accelerated and prices like full underwriting; North American, for example, says its accelerated path uses the same pricing as traditional underwriting when you qualify. Fast is less good when it means simplified issue, which generally costs more per dollar of coverage than full underwriting for a healthy person (SOA, 2020). Ask which one you got.
