Short answer: North American Company for Life and Health (AM Best A+, affirmed 9/3/2026, with sister company Midland National under Sammons Financial) sells the Builder Plus IUL 4 and Smart Builder IUL 3. Their current caps and guaranteed minimums are not published in a consumer document, so ask for a dated rate sheet on an illustration. Its living benefits come at no premium and are discounted at claim, with tighter limits in California. North American also issues the IUL Ethos sells.

Companies: North American Company for Life and Health Insurance; sister company Midland National Life Insurance Company

AM Best financial strength: A+, affirmed 9/3/2026 (Sammons Financial companies) (AM Best: Sammons (North American, Midland National) affirmation (9/3/2026)).

Market position: Sammons Financial No. 8 in 2025 IUL new premium ($215M) (LIMRA: 2025 full-year top 20 IUL company rankings).

Caps: ask for the dated rate sheet

North American's current IUL caps, participation rates and guaranteed minimum caps are in rate sheets aimed at agents, not in a public consumer document, so this review does not quote them. Ask for a dated rate sheet and the guaranteed minimum cap for each account before you buy. Also ask for each product's minimum face: a lower minimum helps small-premium buyers keep the face, and the cost of insurance, in proportion to what they can fund.

Living benefits, and the California difference

North American's critical, chronic and terminal endorsements carry no premium and are paid at an actuarial discount. In California the critical illness election is capped at the lesser of 25% of the face or $50,000, with a guaranteed minimum of 40% of that amount, so $20,000 on a $500,000 policy (North American CA brochure). Its California brochure also says ADDvantage term has no critical illness benefit here. Terminal illness uses a 24-month window. How critical illness riders pay.

ADDvantage term conversion

ADDvantage term converts until the earlier of age 70 or 7, 12, 15 or 20 years for 10, 15, 20 and 30-year terms, with a 5-year minimum (Tritium, April 2024 compilation; confirm the rule in your own contract). On a 30-year term, the conversion right ends at year 20 at the latest.

WriteAway, and what it tells you about incentives

North American's WriteAway program offers accelerated underwriting without an exam for many younger applicants, at the same pricing as traditional underwriting when you qualify. Accelerated underwriting is a good deal for a healthy applicant. Just know that faster placement also benefits the agent, who is paid sooner, which is why Hans explains the exam option too. No-exam life insurance explained.

Midland National and Ethos

Midland National, North American's sister company under Sammons Financial, sells the Strategic Accumulator and Strategic Protector IULs. Its detailed product cards are marked for agent use, so this site does not quote them; ask for a consumer illustration. Ethos's IUL launched in January 2026 is issued by North American (Ethos release); see the Ethos review.
