Guardian's dividend interest rate increased to 6.25% for 2026, with a $1.7 billion dividend allocation to participating policyholders, the largest in its 165-year history (Guardian). Its rate has also moved down in the past, from 6.05% to 5.65% in the compilation we use, before recent increases (dividend history compilation). A dividend interest rate (DIR) is one input to the dividend formula, not your return. Mortality and expense experience, the policy's age and the dividend option you choose all change what is credited, and the internal rate of return on cash value is lower than the DIR. Dividends are not guaranteed.

| OVERALL | Incomplete | No overall grade yet: only 35% of the Index weight can be graded from public data (those dimensions average A-). The overall grade waits for Hans's standardized case (M45 preferred nonsmoker, $500,000 whole life). |
On public data, Guardian Whole Life grades strongest on carrier strength and mutual status. 3 of 5 dimensions wait for a standardized illustration, so treat this as a starting point, not a verdict. Neutral summary of the scorecard, not a personal recommendation.
Best for: Buyers who want a mutual whole life policy with a solid dividend record and a long payout history.
Look elsewhere if: Price per dollar of death benefit is your main test, or you need flexible premiums.

Waiver of premium. On mutual whole life, a waiver of premium rider typically pays the entire premium if you become disabled, so the policy keeps building guaranteed cash value and dividends as if you were still paying. Most universal life waivers cover only the monthly deductions (the charges), so the policy stays in force but stops building. For a 40-year-old who would be relying on the policy's cash value later, that difference is large.
Paid-up additions (PUA). A PUA rider lets you put extra premium into small blocks of fully paid-up whole life, which then earn their own dividends. It speeds up early cash value. Ask how much of each PUA dollar goes to cash value in year 1 and what the agent is paid on it.
Term blend. Blending term into a whole life policy lowers the cost of a given death benefit but adds term that must be converted or dropped later. Ask what the death benefit looks like at 70 and 85 if the term portion is not converted.
