Short answer: published surveys put $500,000 of whole life at about $399 to $472 a month at age 30 and about $1,025 to $1,146 a month at age 50, depending on sex and source. That is roughly 10 to 16 times the cost of 20-year term at the same age. You are paying for lifetime coverage, a guaranteed premium and guaranteed cash value; decide whether you need those guarantees.

Ranges run from the lower to the higher of two sources: Policygenius (MassMutual whole life paid up at 100, Preferred Plus nonsmoker, as of 10/1/2024) and Ethos (traditional whole life, health class not stated, last updated 7/15/2026). Why the midpoint column matters

No policy performs exactly as illustrated. Real results usually land somewhere between the guaranteed column and the illustrated (current) column: some years credit less than assumed, charges can move within their limits, and premiums are rarely paid exactly on schedule. That is why the midpoint column, halfway between the two, is the most useful planning number, and why Hans shows guaranteed, midpoint and current side by side.

Is whole life really "double" the cost?

Only against certain products, so the comparison has to be stated. Against guaranteed universal life (GUL) for the same death benefit, published consumer comparisons show whole life costing substantially more for the same face, because GUL builds little or no cash value. Get side-by-side quotes for your age before you decide. Against an IUL funded to build cash value, the premium is similar, and Ethos's estimates even show the IUL costing more at older ages (IUL cost).

So the honest version is this: you pay more for whole life's guarantees. The premium, death benefit and a cash value schedule are guaranteed, while GUL guarantees the death benefit with little or no cash value and an IUL guarantees only a floor and maximum charges. Hans's opinion is that for most families who want permanent coverage and can fund it, a well-built IUL or GUL buys more coverage per dollar; whole life fits people who want every number guaranteed (is whole life worth it?).

What you get for the price

As with any life insurance policy, the death benefit is generally income-tax-free to your beneficiaries under IRC §101(a).

Frequently asked questions

How much does whole life insurance cost per month?
Published surveys put $500,000 of whole life at about $399 to $472 a month at age 30 and about $1,025 to $1,146 at age 50, depending on sex and source (Policygenius 10/1/2024, Ethos 7/15/2026). Ballpark, not a quote.
Why is whole life so expensive?
It guarantees the premium, a lifetime death benefit and a cash value schedule. Term covers only a set number of years and builds no cash value, so it costs far less.
Is whole life twice as expensive as universal life?
Against guaranteed universal life or a minimum-funded universal life, published examples show whole life at roughly double the premium. Against an IUL funded to build cash value, the premium is similar.
Does whole life cost more for men?
Yes, at the same age men pay more because of higher mortality. In the Policygenius survey a 40-year-old man paid $706 a month for $500,000 vs $588 for a woman.
How do I get an exact whole life quote?
