American Equity AssetShield is an accumulation fixed index annuity from American Equity Investment Life Insurance Company, sold in 5, 7 and 10-year versions plus AssetShield BONUS 10. On rates effective September 2, 2026, AssetShield 10 pays a 9.25% S&P 500 annual cap and 4.50% fixed rate with no fee, the minimum premium is $5,000, and the 10-year surrender charge starts at 12% in most states. There is no income rider; for that, American Equity sells IncomeShield.

Rates on this page were verified October 4, 2026 against American Equity’s AssetShield rate sheets (rates effective September 2, 2026). American Equity says rates are set at issue and subject to change. For reference (latest checks, September 2026): A-rated 5-year MYGAs topped out around 5.50% to 6.05% (public carrier rate sheets, October 14, 2026); and the best nationally available 5-year CDs paid 4.70% to 5.00% APY (Bankrate and Popular Direct, October 18, 2026).

Correction (October 4, 2026): an earlier version of this page listed S&P A-, Moody’s Baa1, Weiss, COMDEX and “Tier A renewal integrity” labels, 10 to 14 year surrender variants and an income rider. American Equity’s own ratings page shows AM Best A, S&P A and Fitch A; AssetShield is sold in 5, 7 and 10-year versions (9-year in California) with no income rider. Unsourced ratings, scores and labels have been removed. This page now reviews AssetShield from American Equity’s rate sheets effective September 2, 2026.

CD vs MYGA, after tax

What $100,000 earns in 5 years: CD vs MYGA, after tax

Rates used: CD 5.00%, the top nationally available 5-year CD (Bankrate, October 14, 2026); change it to the rate you are offered. MYGA 5.95%, the best A-rated rate we track as of October 13, 2026: Delaware Life Pinnacle Plus 5-year (AM Best A-, negative outlook, 7/31/2026), $100,000 and up, effective October 6, 2026 (Delaware Life rate sheet).

CD, interest taxed every year$121,081
MYGA, tax-deferred, before tax$133,507
MYGA after paying tax on all the interest at withdrawal$126,136
Tax deferral alone adds about$674
MYGA ahead of the CD, after tax$5,055

Assumes 22% federal and 0% state income tax, no withdrawals, rates held for the whole term. MYGA interest is taxed as ordinary income when you withdraw it, not as capital gains. Gains taken before age 59 1/2 can owe a 10% IRS penalty, and cashing out early can cost a surrender charge. In an IRA both grow tax-deferred, so the edge there is the rate alone. Bank and credit union deposits are FDIC or NCUA insured up to the limits; a MYGA is backed by the issuing insurer's claims-paying ability and your state's guaranty association up to its limits, not the FDIC. General education, not tax, legal or financial advice.

Hypothetical: what the BONUS 10 bonus is worth if you leave early

Hypothetical, for illustration only, not an American Equity illustration. $100,000 in AssetShield BONUS 10 gets a $15,000 bonus. If the contract is surrendered in year 5, the bonus is 40% vested, so $9,000 of it is forfeited, and a 6% surrender charge plus any MVA apply to the amount above the free withdrawal. The disclosure sets the exact order of those steps. Kept past year 10, the full bonus is yours.

Who it's for, and when to look elsewhere

Fits: a saver who wants index-linked growth with no income rider and no fee, can leave the money for the full 5, 7 or 10 years, and wants to add premium over time.

Is there an American Equity RateShield or Foundation annuity?

No product called RateShield appears in American Equity’s current materials library or on its annuities page (checked October 4, 2026), and American Equity’s income FIAs are IncomeShield 7, 10 and BONUS 10 (IncomeShield 9 in California). Foundation Gold was an earlier American Equity bonus FIA, named in the company’s November 6, 2017 earnings release; it is not in the current library. Today’s lineup is AssetShield, IncomeShield and EstateShield fixed index annuities and GuaranteeShield fixed rate annuities, so if you were quoted a “RateShield” or a “Foundation 5/7/10”, ask for the exact product name and form number on the application.

Questions to ask your agent

  1. What are the minimum guaranteed caps, participation rates and triggers in my contract for each strategy I pick? Please give them to me in writing from the disclosure.
  2. Which version and state schedule am I getting? Show the full surrender schedule by year, how the MVA works, and my free withdrawal amount in year 1 and after.
  3. Am I being shown rates with or without the Performance Rate Rider? Show both side by side, with the fee.
  4. For BONUS 10: what happens to the bonus if I surrender in each year, and is the EBLR worth 0.95% a year for me?
  5. How are you paid on this product? Commission comes from the insurer and is built into pricing, not deducted from premium; ask the percentage and whether the 10-year version pays you more than the 5-year. See how annuity commissions work.

From my desk

When I review an AssetShield quote, the first thing I check is which of the four versions is on the application and which state schedule applies. The same product name covers a 5-year contract that is free of charges after year 5 and a 10-year contract that starts at 12% in most states, and BONUS 10 runs on its own, lower rate sheet.

The number buyers most often misread here is the 35% cap on the 2-year strategies. It is a cap on a two-year return, credited once every two years, not 35% a year. The second is the “with PRR” column: those higher rates cost 1.50% a year (3% per 2-year term), charged whether or not the index pays.

Against a MYGA, I compare the AssetShield fixed rate for the same term with the MYGA rate, then ask how much the client would need the index strategies to beat that gap to make the extra moving parts worth it. On September 2, 2026 rates, AssetShield 5 paid 4.25% fixed while 5-year MYGAs were paying about 5.50% to 6.05%.
