Facts verified against Symetra's Edge Elite rate sheet (effective 10/1/2026), brochure and ratings page on October 4, 2026 · Updated
Rates on this page are from Symetra's rate sheet effective October 1, 2026, checked October 4, 2026. Rates are declared for each term and change; confirm the sheet in effect on your application date. For reference: A-rated 5-year MYGAs topped out around 5.50% to 6.05% (public carrier rate sheets, October 14, 2026); and the best nationally available 5-year CDs paid 4.70% to 5.00% APY (Bankrate and Popular Direct, October 18, 2026).

Symetra Edge Elite is a single-premium fixed indexed annuity from Symetra Life Insurance Company (AM Best A) with a 5-year or 7-year withdrawal charge period. On Symetra's rate sheet effective October 1, 2026, $100,000 or more gets an 11.00% S&P 500 1-year cap, an 8.00% S&P 500 trigger rate and a 4.50% one-year fixed account. You can take 15% a year without a charge. Minimum premium is $25,000.

What "Symetra Edge" means today

"Edge" is Symetra's family name for its accumulation fixed indexed annuities. Symetra's February 24, 2026 announcement names three current products: Symetra Edge Elite, Symetra Edge Frontier and Symetra Edge Revolution, all on the same contract form (ICC19_RC1 in most states). Edge Elite is the one Symetra features on its consumer site, so this page reviews it, with the differences for the other two noted below. Symetra Income Edge Plus, a separate product with a built-in 1.20% lifetime withdrawal rider, is an income product and is not covered here.

Symetra Edge Pro is older: the Edge Pro rate sheet still posted on symetra.com is dated October 24, 2022, and Edge Pro is not in the 2026 announcement. If you own one, your current rates are on your annual renewal notice.

Correction: an earlier version of this page showed Weiss, COMDEX and Fitch grades, a "Renewal Rate Integrity: Tier B" badge, a "Customer Service: Good" grade and a star rating. None came from a primary dated source, so they are gone. It also said surrender charges run 7 to 15 years; Edge Elite offers 5 or 7. It named competitor products as better without current numbers; that is removed too.

CD vs MYGA, after tax

What $100,000 earns in 5 years: CD vs MYGA, after tax

Rates used: CD 5.00%, the top nationally available 5-year CD (Bankrate, October 14, 2026); change it to the rate you are offered. MYGA 5.95%, the best A-rated rate we track as of October 13, 2026: Delaware Life Pinnacle Plus 5-year (AM Best A-, negative outlook, 7/31/2026), $100,000 and up, effective October 6, 2026 (Delaware Life rate sheet).

CD, interest taxed every year$121,081
MYGA, tax-deferred, before tax$133,507
MYGA after paying tax on all the interest at withdrawal$126,136
Tax deferral alone adds about$674
MYGA ahead of the CD, after tax$5,055

Assumes 22% federal and 0% state income tax, no withdrawals, rates held for the whole term. MYGA interest is taxed as ordinary income when you withdraw it, not as capital gains. Gains taken before age 59 1/2 can owe a 10% IRS penalty, and cashing out early can cost a surrender charge. In an IRA both grow tax-deferred, so the edge there is the rate alone. Bank and credit union deposits are FDIC or NCUA insured up to the limits; a MYGA is backed by the issuing insurer's claims-paying ability and your state's guaranty association up to its limits, not the FDIC. General education, not tax, legal or financial advice.

Current Edge Elite rates (effective October 1, 2026)

Source: Symetra Edge Elite rate sheet (Symetra form FAM-1580, rates effective 10/1/2026). The 5-year and 7-year withdrawal charge versions show identical rates. All accounts are 1-year point-to-point. Rates are declared for each interest term and change; home office approval is required above $1 million.

The JPMorgan ETF Efficiente 5 and Franklin Large Cap Value 15% ER are what Symetra calls volatility controlled indexes, and unlike the S&P 500 and Nasdaq-100 they include dividends. Symetra's February 2026 release describes a 15% annual volatility target for the Franklin index. A 150% participation rate on a lower-volatility index is not the same as 150% of the S&P 500. See how annuity crediting actually works.

Hypothetical, not a projection: $100,000 in the S&P 500 trigger account at 8.00%. If the S&P 500 ends the 1-year term up 0.5% or up 25%, the account is credited 8.00% ($8,000). If it ends down 10%, it is credited 0% and the account value does not drop from the index loss.

Contractual minimums (the floor on future renewals)

One inconsistency to know about: Symetra's Edge Elite web page (checked October 4, 2026) still says "10% free annual withdrawals" in one spot and lists a Putnam index, while the October 1, 2026 rate sheet and the February 2026 brochure say 15% and list the Franklin index. The rate sheet and brochure are newer. Ask for the contract summary to confirm what your contract says.

Edge Frontier and Edge Revolution, briefly

Both rate sheets are also effective October 1, 2026 and show the same caps, trigger rates and fixed rates as Edge Elite. Differences on the sheets: Edge Frontier has a $10,000 minimum, no S&P 500 participation-rate account, an 8, 8, 8, 7, 6, 0% 5-year schedule (8, 8, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 0% for 7-year) and 1.00% fixed and trigger minimums after the charge period. Edge Revolution matches Edge Elite's rates, schedules and $25,000 minimum. Which one you are offered depends on the firm selling it; Symetra notes availability varies by distributor. Renewal history Symetra publishes

Symetra posts an Edge Series renewal rate history. As of July 31, 2026, comparing each renewal to the rate at issue (point-to-point and fixed accounts, during the surrender period): 90.4% renewed at the same rate, 5.5% higher, 0.7% at 95% to 99% of the initial rate, 3.4% at 90% to 94%, and 0% below 90%. Symetra's own caveat applies: history is not a promise of future renewals, and it excludes S&P 500 participation rates and rate-locked contracts. Pros and cons

Pros

Cons

Who it's for, and when to look elsewhere

Fits: someone who wants index-linked growth with index losses not credited, can leave the money for 5 to 7 years, values a 15% yearly withdrawal allowance, and has $25,000 or more (ideally $100,000 or more for the top tier).

Look elsewhere if: you mainly want a known rate. A MYGA locks a declared rate for the whole term instead of a 1-year rate. For comparison, A-rated-or-better insurers were paying about 5.50% to 6.05% on 5-year MYGAs and the best nationally available 5-year CDs about 4.70% to 5.00% APY (MYGAs: public carrier rate sheets, October 14, 2026; CDs: Bankrate and Popular Direct, October 18, 2026). Current rates: MYGA rates. Also look elsewhere if you need lifetime income from a rider (Edge Elite has none), or you may need more than 15% a year inside the charge period.

Questions to ask your agent

  1. "What are the minimum cap, minimum trigger rate and minimum fixed rate in my contract, for my state? Please show them in writing."
  2. "Show me the full surrender (withdrawal charge) schedule by year for the version you are recommending, whether the market value adjustment applies in my state, and how the 15% free withdrawal works."
  3. "The 5-year and 7-year versions have the same rates today. Why are you recommending the one you are?"
  4. "How are you paid on this product? What commission percentage does Symetra pay, and does the 7-year version pay more than the 5-year?" (Commission comes from the insurer and is built into pricing; it is not deducted from your premium. See how annuity commissions work.)
  5. "Is this Edge Elite, Edge Frontier or Edge Revolution, and is the rate sheet you showed me the one in effect on my application date?"

From my desk

When an Edge Elite illustration lands on my desk, the first thing I check is which withdrawal schedule it uses. On the October 1, 2026 sheet the 5-year and 7-year versions pay identical caps, trigger rates and fixed rates. The 7-year buys a higher minimum cap during the charge period (3.00% versus 2.00%) and two more years of charges. For most people I want to see a reason in writing before taking the longer one.

The number buyers most often misread on this kind of product is the participation rate on a volatility-target index. "150%" sounds like more than the market. It is 150% of an index built to move less than the S&P 500, so the credited result can be modest. I compare accounts by what they would have credited, not by the headline percentage.

Then I put it next to a MYGA. Edge Elite's fixed account is 4.50% for one year, then renews at Symetra's declared rate (minimum 1.00% during the charge period). A MYGA declares its rate for the full term. If the buyer's real goal is a known number, the MYGA usually answers it more directly; if they want a chance at more than a MYGA rate and accept some 0% years, the index accounts are the reason to own this. These guarantees are backed by the claims-paying ability of Symetra Life Insurance Company. If you have a quote and want a second read, see annuity second opinion.

Frequently asked questions

What are the current Symetra Edge Elite rates?

Per Symetra's rate sheet effective October 1, 2026, for $100,000 or more: S&P 500 1-year point-to-point cap 11.00%, S&P 500 trigger rate 8.00%, Nasdaq-100 cap 11.00%, Franklin Large Cap Value 15% ER cap 16.00%, JPMorgan ETF Efficiente 5 participation 150% with no cap, and a 4.50% one-year fixed account. Under $100,000 the rates are slightly lower (for example a 10.50% S&P 500 cap and 4.35% fixed). The 5-year and 7-year versions show the same rates.

What is the Symetra Edge Elite surrender schedule?

You choose a 5-year or 7-year withdrawal charge period. Most states: 9, 9, 8, 7, 6, 0% (5-year) or 9, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 0% (7-year). California: 8.3, 8, 7, 6, 5, 0% or 8.3, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 0%. A market value adjustment applies to excess withdrawals during the charge period, except in California.

How much can I withdraw from Edge Elite without a charge?

Up to 15% of contract value each contract year, with no withdrawal charge or market value adjustment, per the October 1, 2026 rate sheet and the February 2026 brochure.

What is the minimum cap on Symetra Edge Elite?

The rate sheet lists a minimum cap of 2.00% during the 5-year withdrawal charge period or 3.00% during the 7-year period, and 1.00% after that. The fixed account minimum is 1.00% during the charge period and 0.50% after. Confirm the minimums printed in your own contract.

What is a trigger rate?

A trigger account credits the declared trigger rate whenever the index return for the 1-year term is zero or higher. If the index ends the term below where it started, nothing is credited for that term. On the October 1, 2026 sheet the S&P 500 trigger rate is 8.00% for $100,000 or more.
