Editorial review by a licensed agent who may earn a commission. No insurer pays for placement or grades. Hans is paid a commission by the insurer if you buy a policy through him. For life insurance, ask and he will tell you what he earns on your specific policy.

Short answer: Global Atlantic stopped selling new indexed universal life policies as of July 1, 2023, and continues to service the policies already in force. Its insurer Forethought Life holds an AM Best A rating, affirmed effective 10/23/2025. If you own one, nothing in your contract changed because new sales stopped, but a closed block is worth reviewing every year: get an in-force illustration, watch the caps, and know your options.

On the record:

What "closed to new business" means for you

Global Atlantic's exit from new IUL sales was reported in 2023 (InsuranceNewsNet). Insurers stop selling a product for many reasons: pricing, competition, strategy. It does not mean existing policies end or lose their guarantees. The insurer remains bound by your contract. What can change is anything the contract lets the insurer set: caps, participation rates and current charges, within their stated limits. On a closed block, the insurer has no new buyers to impress with competitive caps, which is why annual monitoring matters more.

Your annual checklist

  1. Request an in-force illustration each year showing guaranteed and illustrated values, at your current premium and at the premium needed to keep the policy to age 100 or 121.
  2. Write down this year's caps and participation rates from the annual statement and compare them with last year's.
  3. Check whether the policy is on track to stay in force on the guaranteed column. If it lapses there before your planned age, decide now whether to add premium.
  4. Review loans: a loan that grows faster than cash value can push the policy toward lapse and a tax bill.
  5. If the numbers have drifted, get a review before deciding anything. Options include adjusting premium, reducing face, or a 1035 exchange.

Should you replace it?

Not automatically. A newer policy brings new surrender charges, new underwriting at your current age and health, and a new contestability period. Replacement in California requires specific notices and comparisons, and it only makes sense if the new policy is clearly better for you after those costs. The honest answer for many owners is to keep the policy and fund it correctly. A review tells you which case you are in.
