MassMutual set its 2026 dividend interest rate at 6.60%, up from 6.40% in 2025, with an estimated $2.9 billion payout to participating policyowners (MassMutual). Its rate was 7.10% in 2016 and fell to 6.00% for 2021 through 2023 before three years of increases (dividend history compilation). That path is typical of the big mutuals: rates track long-term bond yields with a lag, because the general account is mostly bonds.
A dividend interest rate (DIR) is one input to the dividend formula, not your return. Mortality and expense experience, the policy's age and the dividend option you choose all change what is credited, and the internal rate of return on cash value is lower than the DIR. Dividends are not guaranteed.

MassMutual · vs. other whole life policies · Draft grades on public data. Grades are shown on the page only and are Hans's editorial view.
| Dimension (weight) | Grade | One-line take |
|---|---|---|
| Cost per dollar of death benefit (standard case) (30%) | Pending | One published price point exists (Policygenius, male 40, $500,000); peer set and standard case still needed |
| Dividend history vs peers (25%) | A- | 6.60% dividend interest rate for 2026, up from 6.40%; fell from 7.10% (2016) to 6.00% before three years of increases. Not guaranteed. [1] as of Oct 2025 re-grading |
| Riders, incl. PUA and term blend (20%) | Pending | Rider menu (PUA, term blend, waiver, chronic/LTC) to confirm from the current CA forms |
| Cash value at years 10/20 (standard case) (15%) | Pending | Needs Hans's standardized illustration, guaranteed and current columns |
| Carrier strength and mutual status (10%) | A+ | AM Best A++, stable, affirmed, effective 10/23/2025. [2] as of Oct 23, 2025 re-grading |
| OVERALL | Incomplete | No overall grade yet: only 35% of the Index weight can be graded from public data (those dimensions average A). The overall grade waits for Hans's standardized case (M45 preferred nonsmoker, $500,000 whole life). |
On public data, MassMutual Whole Life grades strongest on dividend history vs peers, carrier strength and mutual status. 3 of 5 dimensions wait for a standardized illustration, so treat this as a starting point, not a verdict. Neutral summary of the scorecard, not a personal recommendation.
Best for: Buyers who want guaranteed cash value and premiums from a mutual with a long dividend record, and who can afford the premium for life.
Look elsewhere if: You mainly want the most death benefit per dollar (GUL or term is cheaper), or the premium would strain your budget.

Published example, Policygenius, 10/1/2024
| Policy ($500,000, male 40) | Monthly premium | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| MassMutual whole life (paid up at 100, Preferred Plus) | $737 | Guaranteed death benefit, guaranteed cash value schedule, dividends (not guaranteed) |
| Pacific Life GUL (same face) | $279.50 | Guaranteed death benefit; little or no cash value |
Source: Policygenius. Example rates, not quotes; your price depends on age, health class, face amount and date.
The extra $457.50 a month is not lost: much of it builds guaranteed cash value plus whatever dividends add. The question is whether you want that money inside a life insurance policy, earning the policy's internal return, rather than somewhere else. For a buyer who values a guaranteed floor on savings and is sure they will pay the premium for life, it can be. For a buyer who needs the death benefit and is not sure about the premium in 15 years, it usually is not.
